Questions?
Q:Gene Uptard is ruining the NFL for the fans. Please, does anyone else want to absolutely pwn him?
A:I agree. When NFL players are saying that rookie salaries need to be capped in some way (Upshaw's earlier argument was that you can get injured so fast, that players are just trying to get money ****), you need to admit you're wrong (as the rep of a PLAYER union).
**** what I say to that, is that 1) I don't think you should get $$ if you havn't even played. Big whoop, they got injured, that sucks for them but it shouldn't give other guys $$ they didn't earn. 2) They can still get lots of guaranteed $$ WITHOUT it being over-the-top-more-than Tom Brady $$ (I'm looking at you Matt Ryan!).
Some argue that if it isn't a "set for life" amount, and they were injured almost immediately, that most don't have skills/qualifications to do anything else (and eventually wouldn't be able to support themselves) ----tough shit! You should have gotten your degree. Plus you knew the risks going into it! |

Q:Gene Upshaw said he would brake a former player neck because he is trying to get help for retired players.
A:Well, that is not exactly how it went down. To say "I will break his neck" is a threat, and chargeable under the law if there is deemed to be an opportunity and willingness to follow through. That is not what Upshaw said. "A guy like DeLamielleure says the things he said about me; you think I'm going to invite him to dinner? No. I'm going to break his ... damn neck," Upshaw was responding to a question about criticism he received from former players prior to the Super bowl last year. The remark is out of bounds for a high profile leader like Upshaw, sure, but not exactly a threat. Then the guy says that his family was afraid...come on man, no one believes that, and if it is true, you have bigger issues at home. Retired players really do need help, they have given a lot to the game. In those days a player did not make much as compared to today. But it is hard to convince a guy making 6 million a year that he needs to donate a larger portion of his money to the union to take care of guys from 30 years ago. Even the "ham and eggers" at 200k think a better investment is stocks, bonds, property, etc. An easy way to fund the entire pension system is every 4th year, each team donates the salary cap increase to the players union. That average length of a career is 4 years. So, everyone will take a pay freeze every 4th year. Do you think this will fly? Of course not. |

Q:
A:NFL players take the highest risks to their health and well being, they suffer the most debilitating injuries, they generate the most money for their owners, and they work under the most insecure labor contracts of all the major sports. An NFL player's contract can be terminated at any time and for any reason even if his performance exceeds the owner's expectations. There is no cap on NFL owner profits; but there is a hard cap on player salaries. NFL player should be the highest paid players in pro sports. NFL owners have a firm grip on the scrotum of the players because Gene Upshaw is the most stupid union leader in the entire 142 year history of the American Labor Movement. |
